Introduction to Newborn Photography

Looking for a newborn photographer? Then welcome to the cozy and magical world of newborn photography, where those first adorable yawns and tiny toes are captured as forever memories! It’s so much more than snapping photos – it’s about weaving the story of your brand-new bundle of joy, the love that surrounds them, and all those sweet, tiny details that seem to change in the blink of an eye.

As a seasoned newborn photographer with over 13 years of experience and having the joy of photographing over 1600 babies, we understand the importance of turning this fleeting newborn time into lasting memories. Finding the right newborn photographer might seem daunting, but fear not! In this blog post I’m here to guide you through the process of finding a newborn photographer, sharing insights from behind the lens to ensure you find the perfect artist to capture your little one’s debut in this big, beautiful world.

Why Newborn Photography?

Newborn photography is more than just a trend; it’s a way of preserving the first days of your child’s life in a timeless and artistic form. These photographs are not just images; they’re treasured family heirlooms passed down through generations. As a photographer serving clients from all over Southern California, and the Los Angeles area, I’ve seen first hand how amazing it can be for new parents to see their newest little love perfectly captured in a photo.

Those tiny eyelashes, wispy hair, tiny fingers, and the deepest, sleepiest slumber are all parts of your newborn that will change in the blink of an eye. A skilled newborn photographer knows how to capture these details in a way that will help you remember that crazy in love feeling of holding your newborn long after they’ve grown. If you’re scratching your head, wondering how to find a newborn photographer who can document these incredibly special moments, you’re in the right place! This guide is a culmination of our experience and expertise, aimed at helping you navigate the journey of finding the perfect newborn photographer.

Essential Qualities of a Newborn Photographer

Parents! Please take extra special care when deciding on your newborn photographer. Ensure you are putting your brand new little love into the hands of someone who is highly experienced and specializes in newborn photography. I can’t stress this enough. Ensuring your baby’s comfort and safety is paramount to us, and it should be for anyone you hire. Your wedding photographer is NOT going to be a good choice. Similarly, neither is your headshot photographer. Or your neighbor or family member that is a hobbyist photographer. Please choose someone that is trained and experienced in newborn photography, specifically. Someone that knows how to soothe, handle, pose, feed, burp, swaddle and comfort your baby. Someone that knows the right temperature the room should be or where to buy props and wraps made specifically for newborns (and this is not Amazon btw!).

Selecting the right photographer for your brand new little love involves more than admiring their portfolio or finding the lowest price. It requires understanding the unique qualities that make a newborn photographer outstanding. Experience, patience, creativity, a gentle touch, and an understanding of baby safety are paramount. It’s essential to find someone who not only has the technical skills but also the training, personality and sensitivity to work with your new baby.

Before diving into the search for a newborn photographer, it’s important to prepare. Knowing when to start looking, understanding the pricing, and having a clear idea of the style you prefer will streamline the process and make your search more effective.

Timeline: When to Start Looking for a Newborn Photographer

The best time to start looking for a newborn photographer is during your second or third trimester. Many sought-after photographers book a few months in advance. Securing a spot on their calendar early ensures you won’t miss out. At Matt Cramer Photography, we are typically booked 4-6 weeks in advance. We have a set amount of due dates per month that we will prebook. Once that number is reached, we consider ourselves fully booked for the month.

Tip: If you are trying to find a newborn photographer and your baby has already arrived- don’t fret! We can usually offer a few last minute sessions as photographers always account for a little wiggle room in their schedules. Some babies arrive early, some come later than expected. And when this happens, a last minute session will pop up!

But, remember, I always tell potential clients, it’s never too early to book your newborn photoshoot!
